Do This One Thing and You Will Never Procrastinate Again

Have you ever woken up in the morning and thought to yourself ‘I am definitely going to the gym today’, only to make excuses and postpone your gym session to the next day? This is extremely common with business executives and this is why business executives need to schedule their Personal training sessions like any other appointment. Whether meetings pop up or time is simply not on your side you, as a business executive won’t ever make the excuse of skipping the gym again.

Procrastination is the natural enemy of consistency, and consistency is one of the key elements of a thriving fitness routine and healthy lifestyle.

Procrastination is one of the biggest reasons why people fail to achieve their fitness goals. This is not something that just pops up every now and again. It is a cycle. Tomorrow turns into next week, and next week turns into next month, and before you know it, years have passed and you are no closer to looking or feeling the way that you want. Chances are you feel a lot worse.

TAKE ACTION AND BREAK THE CYCLE TODAY.

Let’s address two common excuses that people use to put off going to the gym and some obvious solutions.

1) I’m too tired

Fair enough.. As a business executive you are in a leadership position and this can take an extreme toll on your body's ability to perform both mentally and physically.

So how do we address this issue?

The first thing here is sleep, both quantity and quality. Most medical professionals recommend that adults (regardless of gender) should get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. If you’re not doing this, then that’s the first thing to aim for. If you are getting the recommended hours of sleep but you still feel tired, maybe it’s time to tweak your night time pre bed routine. A recent journal article in Nature of Science and Sleep found that using your smartphone or watching TV immediately before you sleep will negatively impact your sleep cycle and restrict your body’s ability to recharge for the next day. Try reading a book or listening to relaxing music instead. Use this time to switch off from work and focus on being restful in your actions, your company will thank you for it when you are eager to perform and lead the next day.

Another factor is energy levels from food consumption. If you find yourself drinking 4-5 coffees per day, then chances are that you are not eating healthily and as a result you are in fact doing more damage to your central nervous system leading to prolonged fatigue. This is where nutrition is king (or queen). The personal trainers and in house nutritionist at Lockeroom teach and guide their members the importance of prioritising a whole food diet by minimising processed foods and replacing these calorie dense inflammatory foods with micronutrient rich foods. Low calorie nutrient rich foods are commonly found in lean meats, fruits and vegetables . This will boost your energy, allow you to feel more satiated so you feel the urge to snack less and will keep you more alert for longer periods of time (not to mention the long term positive health benefits these foods can also have on your body composition whilst also lowering your risk of cardiovascular related diseases significantly too)

2) I don’t have enough time

There’s an old saying that ‘if it’s important, you’ll make time for it.’ If you find yourself stuck behind a desk all day or under the pump with other matters then why not treat the gym as an appointment? Instead of thinking of the gym as a chore or task, I would suggest that you actively schedule a time every day for you to do something fitness related.

Think about it. If you had a routine check-up appointment with a dentist, would you just postpone it? Probably not. Why? Because you might be sacrificing the health of your teeth and gums. Just as you have one set of teeth, you only have one body, so why not look after it? The personal trainers at Lockeroom proactively ensure each of their clients have booked into numerous sessions each week and check in with the members on a daily basis to ensure they are on track with their health and fitness goals.

There’s also strong psychological evidence that supports scheduling appointments or in this instance, personal training sessions. A 2014 article published in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that individuals who adhere to a time-based schedule are more likely to have increased personal control and improved well being. So just as you might schedule something in your calendar, I suggest you block out around 60 minutes a few times a week that are dedicated to fitness. This way, you are more likely to adhere to a gym session and in the long-term, develop a healthy, fitness routine. Just like the saying “manners maketh man”, (or woman).

If you follow this advice, you’ll find that you are no longer procrastinating, but you are being consistent. Moreover, you are holding yourself accountable, which is something that is extremely admirable, how any great industry leader should be perceived as.

I encourage any business executive reading this who may resonate with some of these issues to reach out.
