The Best Time To Start Training Was Yesterday.

Coming back to the gym after a long hiatus can be both daunting and challenging. However, it is completely normal for people to lose track of their fitness goals so there is nothing to get worried about. After all, many gym goers might take time off for numerous different reasons, whether it is a personal crisis or simply just losing the motivation to continue.

When a new client comes to Lockeroom Gym after a long break from the gym, our personal trainers are ready and willing to help them get back on track. Of course, coming back to the gym is not going to be business-as-usual. There are three main points that we tell our new clients;

1- Manage your expectations

Regardless of whether you are an avid weightlifter or cardio lover, you’re not going to simply be able to take off from where you left. In other words, be prepared to realise that you're not as strong, not as fast, or not as fit as you used to be. Don’t let this demoralise you, and most of all do not compare yourself to what you used to be. Like any other activity, a long-break tends to make people a bit ‘rusty.’

This does not mean, however, that you’ll never regain your strength, speed, or fitness. Nevertheless, it will take time. When military snipers undergo target practice, they are told to ‘aim small, miss small.’ We understand this at Lockeroom, and so our aim is not only to get you back into healthy habits, but achieve your fitness goals one step at a time.

2- Get set for some soreness

Just like any rusty tool, it will take time for your body to recover and adapt when you resume going to the gym. This is a normal sensation that we in the fitness industry call delayed-onset muscle soreness or DOMS. However, this is not a bad thing. Exercising your muscles, whether through resistance-training or cardio, causes microscopic tears in your muscle fibers. As your body responds by repairing these microscopic tears, it causes soreness and tenderness in the respective muscles that have been trained, and usually last for one-two days.

The good news, however, is that when recovered, your muscles are even stronger than previously. In the long-run, you’ll find that you can lift heavier or run further but also recover faster. “Get comfortable being uncomfortable” This is your first sign of progress, or otherwise known as earning your stripes! Our personal trainers are well-suited to help manage the recovery process through stretching or other techniques, so it’s much better to embrace the DOMS than fearing it.

3- You’re not alone!

Lockeroom is more than just a gym. It’s a community of like-minded corporates who understand better than anybody that hard work, commitment, dedication and long-term investment is the key to success. We put that same effort into helping our clients with their fitness goals. Just like the saying ‘the strength off the wolf is the pack, and the strength of the pack is the wolf,’ we believe that a fitness-based community is one of the best ways to improve the fitness of the individual.

When you walk through our doors, you’re not simply going to the gym. You’re joining a community. Our personal trainers cater to your needs and are ready to assist you in multiple areas, whether it’s nutrition, strength, weight-loss, or simply adopting healthier habits.
