Why It Gets Harder to Lose Weight as You Age

Have you noticed that losing weight seems to get more difficult as you age? Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Decreased Metabolism:

As we age, our metabolism slows down, which means we burn fewer calories at rest. That means the same dietary habits now cause a slow increase in body fat which 10 years ago may actually have resulted in weight loss.

2. Hormonal Changes

Changes in hormones such as oestrogen and testosterone can also affect our ability to lose weight. For example, women may experience a decrease in oestrogen levels during menopause, which can lead to increased belly fat and difficulty losing weight. Lower Testosterone levels in men will also result in higher body fat and lower muscle mass.

3. Loss of Muscle Mass

Loss of Muscle Mass: As we age, we also tend to lose muscle mass. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue, which means that as we lose muscle, our metabolism slows down even further.

The good news is you’re doing all the right things to reverse ageing. Cutting back on alcohol, getting 7+ hours of sleep, doing strength training 2-3x per week and eating good foods puts a halt in the ageing process and turns back the clock.

The key is not stopping.
